Cavafy’s pen is powerful and revealing. It shows how intelligent, well meaning people can become trapped in political systems where all available leaders are flawed. The speaker’s longing for “a fourth, an honest man” echoes the hope many feel with Mandani’s election as mayor of New York. A desire for leadership that moves beyond cynicism and compromise. The poem reminds us why moments that promise integrity and renewal feel so rare and deeply meaningful.

Thank you for your unpacking of the history behind the poem. A good reminder that nothing ever really changes.

For better or worse, it really doesn't in politics, does it?

I’m nominating you along with a few others for an award - hope that is OK - a substack thing / more tomorrow.

This post was clever and very well suited to the moment. Also, I didn't get a chance to thank you yet for the printed poem you sent me. It was a wonderful gift and is now one of my treasured possessions.
